TASK 1

The stories of identical twins' nearly identical lives are often astonishing, but perhaps none

more so than those of the identical twins born in a small town in Ohio, back in the 1930s.

The twin boys were separated at birth, being adopted by different families in two towns

thousands of miles away from each other. Unbelievable as it sounds, unknown to each other,

both families chose the first name James for the boys, although, of course, their surnames

were different. And here the coincidences just begin. Both Jameses grew up not even knowing

of the other, yet both sought law-enforcement training, and worked as police officers. Both of

them had a natural talent for music, and were quite skillful instrumentalists who regularly

performed in their local communities. Each married women named Linda, and they both had

only one child, a son each, whom one named James Alan and the other named James Allan,

with a double ”l”. The twin brothers also divorced their first wives and married other women -

both named Betty, and they both owned dogs which they named Toy. Forty years after their

childhood separation, the two men were reunited to share their amazingly similar lives.

TASK 2

Piggy-backing on a modified Boeing 747 jet, the 75-ton space shuttle Endeavour appeared

over San Francisco at around half past nine in the morning and some two hours later over the

landmarks of Los Angeles, including Disneyland, the Getty Center, Universal Studios and

Malibu Beach. It then landed at Los Angeles International Airport.

Endeavour, the youngest shuttle from a fleet that includes Atlantis and Discovery, replaced

the shuttle Challenger, which was destroyed in an accident in 1986 that killed seven

astronauts.

In service since 1992, it has made 25 trips, logged 198 million km in space and circled the

globe almost 4,700 times. In mid-October, Endeavour will parade through the streets of Los

Angeles as it makes its way to a museum. Los Angeles has ordered 400 trees to be cut down

and street lights and traffic lights are to be temporarily removed to let the space shuttle pass

through neighbourhood streets. There are plans for 1,000 new trees to be planted to replace

those felled. Endeavour will be on display from 30 October.

Last year, NASA, the US space agency, retired the three ships in its fleet after finishing the

US portion of the $100 billion International Space Station, a permanently staffed research

facility that is owned by 15 countries and flies about 402km above Earth.

The closure of the programme was ordered by the White House, so NASA could devote more

resources to destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, such as asteroids and Mars.

NASA is leading the design of a huge new rocket and capsule for these missions, but this

hardware is not expected to launch with crew aboard before 2021.

TASK 3

A group of nursery workers in central Denmark have made parents an offer that they

might find hard to refuse. They have promised to provide two hours' free childcare on

Thursday evening, so that the parents can go to bed and make more babies. I asked Ms

Lotte Nyman of the Grasshoppers kindergarten in North Fyn about this interesting new

initiative.

What is the real motive behind your rather unusual offer?

Well, a lack of young children means the future of local nurseries is uncertain. I am sure that

nearly half of the nursery's families will accept the offer.

Exercises with question tags

Task

More activities are here.

Question tags - special cases

Tag Question Special Cases

Negative Adverbs

The adverbs neverrarelyseldomhardlybarely and scarcely have a negative sense. Even though they may be in a positive statement, the feeling of the statement is negative. We treat statements with these words like negative statements, so the question tag is normally positive. Look at these examples:
positive statement treated as negative statementpositive tag
He never came again,did he?
She can rarely come these days, can she?
You hardly ever came late, did you?
barely know you,do I?
You would scarcely expect her to know that, would you?

Intonation

We can change the meaning of a tag question with the musical pitch of our voice. With rising intonation, it sounds like a real question. But if our intonation falls, it sounds more like a statement that doesn't require a real answer:
 intonation
You don't know where my wallet is,do you?/ risingreal question
It's a beautiful view,isn't it?\ fallingnot a real question

Imperatives

Sometimes we use question tags with imperatives (invitations, orders), but the sentence remains an imperative and does not require a direct answer. We use won'tfor invitations. We use can, can't, will, would for orders.
 imperative + question tagnotes:
invitationTake a seat, won't you?polite
orderHelp me, can you?quite friendly
Help me, can't you?quite friendly (some irritation?)
Close the door, would you?quite polite
Do it now, will you.less polite
Don't forget, will you.with negative imperatives only will is possible

Same-Way Tag Questions

Although the basic structure of tag questions is positive-negative or negative-positive, it is sometimes possible to use a positive-positive or negative-negative structure. We use same-way tag questions to express interest, surprise, anger etc, and not to make real questions.
Look at these positive-positive tag questions:
  • So you're having a baby, are you? That's wonderful!
  • She wants to marry him, does she? Some chance!
  • So you think that's amusing, do you? Think again.
Negative-negative tag questions usually sound rather hostile:
  • So you don't like my looks, don't you? (British English)

Asking For Information Or Help

Notice that we often use tag questions to ask for information or help, starting with a negative statement. This is quite a friendly/polite way of making a request. For example, instead of saying "Where is the police station?" (not very polite), or "Do you know where the police station is?" (slightly more polite), we could say: "You wouldn't know where the police station is, would you?" Here are some more examples:
  • You don't know of any good jobs, do you?
  • You couldn't help me with my homework, could you?
  • You haven't got $10 to lend me, have you?

Some More Special Cases

am right, aren't I?aren't I (not amn't I)
You have to go, don't you?you (do) have to go...
have been answering, haven't I?use first auxiliary
Nothing came in the post, did it?treat statements with nothing, nobody etc like negative statements
Let's go, shall we?let's = let us
He'd better do it, hadn't he?he had better (no auxiliary)
Now we'll look at some examples of tag questions of all types.

Question tags

  • It’s beautiful, isn’t it?
  • They have read the review, haven’t they?
  • He can’t sing very well, can he?
  • You like beer, don’t you?
Amint láthatod a question tag képzése nagyon egyszerű.
  1. Mindig a mondat végén van.
  2. Mindig vesszővel választjuk el a fő mondatrésztől.
  3. A fő mondatrészben használt segédige állító vagy tagadó formájával képezzük + a személyes névmás.
További példák: (A mondatok magyar jelentéséhez mozgasd az egeret a mondat fölé)
Fő mondatrészsegédigenévmás
Fő mondatrészsegédigenévmás
John lives in Budapest,doesn'the?
You don't like flying,doyou?
He went to London last year, didn'the?
She can't drive very well,canshe?

  2. Ha beszélgető partnertől visszajelzést, megerősítést várunk a kérdésünkre, akkor az utókérdést mindig emelkedő intonációval használjuk.

Néhány további szabály a question tag-hez

  1. Ha a fő mondatrészben a be segédige szerepel egyes szám első személyben és pozitív formában (I’m), akkor az utókérdés a következőképpen alakul: “aren’t I”
  2. Ha a fő mondatrész “Let’s”-el kezdődik, az utókérdés “shall we” lesz.
  3. Felszólító mondat esetén az utókérdés “will you”. Pl: Close the window, will you?
  4. Ha a mondat negatív jelentésű szavakat tartalmaz, pl: hardly, never, nobody, az utókérdés pozitív lesz. Pl: Nobody lives in this house, do they? vagy You’ve never liked me, have you?
  5. Ha az alany “Nothing”, az utókérdésben a személyes névmás “It” lesz. Pl: Nothing bad happened, did it?
  6. Ha az alany nobody, somebody, everybody, no one, someone, or everyone, az utókérdésben szereplő névmás a “they” lesz.
  7. Ha a fő mondatrészben a főige (nem a segédige) “have”, akkor az utókérdésben “do”-t használunk. Pl: You have a boat, don’t you?
  8. “Used to” használata esetén, az utókérdésben a “didn’t szerepel. Pl: You used to live in Paris, didn’t you?

TASK 1

People celebrate April Fools’ Day all around the world. But not all celebrations are the same;

April Fools’ Day in one country is often quite different than in another.

April Fools’ Day in the United States is usually a day of trickery, pranks (or, in other words:

tricks played on somebody else as a joke) and outrageous stunts. The media becomes

involved, running bogus news stories or promoting false products. The April Fools’ Day

celebrations can occur any time of the day. The victim of the prank is supposed to laugh at it,

and traditionally he or she will attract bad luck by getting upset about the prank.

April Fools’ Day in France is traditionally called Poisson d'Avril, which translates to "April

Fish." The traditional prank in France is to tape a fish to someone's back, and call them ‘April

fish!’ when they discover it. Originally, the fish was a real dead fish, but nowadays it is most

often a paper fish.

In Scotland, April Fools’ Day celebrations last for two days. April Fools’ Day in Scotland is

sometimes called Taily Day or April Gowk. The traditional prank for the first day is to send

people on a fool's errand. They give someone an urgent note that they are supposed to deliver,

but the note informs the receiver that it is an April Gowk joke, and they send the person to yet

another person, who sends them somewhere else, and so on.

April Fools’ Day in Poland is called Pryma Aprylis. In addition to being a day of pranks,

April Fools’ Day celebrations often involve dressing up in costumes. April Fools’ Day in

Poland is largely a holiday for children, but adults also get in on the fun.

The origins of April Fools’ Day are obscure and April Fools’ Day is observed all around the

world in different unique ways.

TASK 2

It began five years ago when Brutus, believed to be then about six years old, was rescued

from a circus cage barely large enough for him to turn around in in the tiny village of St.

Denis-d’Authou, in northern France. When discovered by animal welfare campaigners in his

lonely cage of a home, which measured just two square metres, his health was rapidly getting

worse. Despite resistance from the circus owner, Brutus was seized by French police and

taken to a temporary shelter. In April 2008 he was on his way to Shamwari – a game reserve

in South Africa. There, for the first time in his life, Brutus was able to roam on a piece of land

the size of a football pitch with grass under his feet and the hot African sun beating on his

back.

Arriving at the same time were two tiny lion cub sisters, Marina and Sarnia. They had been

dumped outside the home of veterinarian Monica Minciu in the Romanian capital of

Bucharest. She had bottle-fed them back to health. But much as Monica loved them, the cubs

would soon be too big for her tiny flat. She said: “They took over my life completely. They

loved to cuddle up and sit on the sofa and watch TV with me.” Monica believes they had been

snatched from a Romanian circus where they would have been trained to perform tricks.

There, in the African bush under the guidance of Glen Vena, an animal care manager, Marina

and Sarnia were given their own enclosure where they were quickly transformed from

overgrown kittens into powerful lionesses.

The following year the decision was taken to put the three lions together. Glen said: “Lions

are sociable animals and we thought it would be nice for Brutus to be with the two lionesses.

It was always going to be risky and, at first, the girls were scared of Brutus. But within a few

hours they started scrapping and rubbing against each other. Sadly, Sarnia died in 2010. After

that the relationship between Brutus and Marina became stronger and soon they became

inseparable.”

Glen said: “In my 10 years working with animals in a captive environment I have never seen

anything like it. They rest together and play together. Marina is often quite provocative,

jumping towards him and tapping his face to get him to get up and chase her. He, on the other

hand, watches her moving about until she lies down to rest and then he will stretch out beside

her. Brutus likes to groom her and if he has finished his food first, he will go to where she is

and wait for her to come out. Even though the two won’t be able to produce any cubs of their

own, it is a joy to see them together being so affectionate. Even being apart for a few minutes

when they’re fed is a big deal. It’s as if they belong together.”

ROBOTIC CAR DEVELOPED BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY

Scientists at Oxford University have developed a new car that can "see" the world around it

The adapted car can use data from technology (0) ________ . Professor Newman, the project

leader, is convinced that on-board computer capacity will have a great effect on motoring in

the future. He said: "You can imagine one company advertising a model of car

(17) __________ and then another manufacturer will come out with one that does fifteen

minutes."

Already there are cars (18) __________ and last year Google announced its self-
driving car, saying that it had driven more than 140,000 miles on American roads. The Oxford

car differs from Google's, because (19) __________ and uses a three dimensional map of

streets.

Prof Newman added: "Think of the impact (20) __________ : they have totally

changed them, and the same thing is going to happen on the roads. In the future autonomous

robotic vehicles will take us safely and efficiently from A to B (21) __________ .

The advantage of computer assisted vehicles is that they will never get tired and they

can connect to the internet to communicate with other cars. As Prof Newman explained: "We

need cars that do the thinking and concentrating for you, cars that (22) __________ . If the

going is slow why can't I watch the show I missed last night, Skype with the kids, read a book

(23) __________ and get the car to handle the job of the trip for me?"

The legal problem of how people can insure an autonomously driven car is one of the

questions that will need to be resolved, but for now Professor Newman says he wants to

concentrate on making the technology work.

THREE ACCIDENTS

A man was working on his motorcycle in the garden while his wife was making dinner. He

started racing the engine of the motorcycle and somehow it started moving, so the man was

dragged through a glass door and the motorcycle ended up on the floor inside the house. The

wife ran into the dining room and found her husband lying on the floor, cut and bleeding, the

motorcycle lying next to him and the glass door shattered. She immediately called an

ambulance.

After the husband was taken to hospital, the wife pushed the motorcycle outside.

Seeing that petrol had spilled on the floor, she wiped it up with some paper towels and threw

them into the toilet.

Two hours later, after arriving home from the hospital, the husband looked at the

shattered door and the damage done to his motorcycle. He became depressed, went into the

bathroom, sat on the toilet and smoked a cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, he flipped it

into the toilet bowl while still seated. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard a very loud

explosion.

She ran into the bathroom and found her husband on the floor. He was suffering burns

on his bottom and the back of his legs. The wife called for an ambulance again and the same

crew was sent. They loaded the husband onto a stretcher and began carrying him down to the

street.

While going down the steps, the paramedics asked the wife how the husband had

burned himself. She told them, and they started laughing so hard that one of them tipped the

stretcher and dropped the husband. He fell down the remaining steps and broke his ankle.

Cristobal
I went to Berlin last May with my girlfriend. We flew to Berlin with Easyjet.
We stayed for four days in a little hotel away from the city centre, butnear the subway station. The hotel was nice and quite cheap, around 35 euros for night in a double room.
During the day we walked around the city. We saw all the famous places like the “Wall of Berlin”,”Brandenburguer Toor”,the “Reichstag”(it´s the German Parliament) and we visited very beautiful squares and very interesting neighborhoods. We also visited the Pergamo Museum,it´s an Islamic,Roman and Greek art museum.
At night we went to restaurants and had fantastic sushi, sausages and drank a lot of German beer. We also went to very popular dance club,in Germany it is very popular and its electronic music is great! We were in Watergate — it´s a club near of Wall of Berlin. We didn´t buy any gift.
We had a great time.Berlin is full of recent history and it is very interesting city.People have an open mind and have a freedomsensation. We only had one problem: my girlfriend lost her ID card in the airport, when we were boarding the plane. We found the ID card on time to fly.

My last holidays
(Sent by Sara Vera, a student from Madrid, Spain)
My last holidays were my longest holidays, and I think that I learnt how to spend the time. I enjoyed a lot with my friends, and my family, and I met new people too, because I was in different places during the summer, and I wanted to meet people everywhere.

The first place I visited was Calpe, a town in Alicante, because I was invited for some days by a friend who has a house there. I went with some friends, and we spent there just five days, but it was enough time to want to come back next summer! We stayed on the beach for hours, in the mornings, just lying and asleep, taking enough energy for the rest of the day and for the night! At night, we went out until next morning. We danced, met people, walked near the beach... while we watched the moon in silence.

Next, I went to Paris with my parents and my sister. Actually, I did not go to Paris, I went to Disneyland. We stayed there for four days, and it was really unforgettable. When I saw the park, I opened my eyes the most I could and I did not close them until the night at the hotel. I felt like a little girl again.

Finally, I was in Salou. My parents looked for a really relaxing time, and we were on the beach for some days. There, we did not visit anything, we were there just to rest. After those days, we came back to Madrid, and, unfortunately, we had to start our routines again.
